Brigsley - Waithe beck - Volunteer Day

14th November 2017

Brigsley - Waithe beck - bank maintenance.  Location: Waithe beck at Brigsley – Grid Reference - TA 25074 01754 ( /) - Just past the ice cream place!! Times: 10am – 1.30pm(ish)

This is a beautiful part of the Waithe Beck. In 2011 the LCSP with their partners
worked to improve this part of the Waithe Beck. Originally it was an over-widened straight
channel suffering from over-shading by trees and scrub. Ten log flow deflectors were
installed to help create a sinuous channel to improve flow velocity, and two gravel side
berms were installed to reduce bank erosion and create a narrow, deep section to provide
habitat for adult fish species such as the brown trout.

A few years on and some of the unwanted scrub is returning which will eventually overshade
the stream once more, so this is where we'd like your help!
The day will mostly involve carefully removing unwanted scrub that is re-establishing itself
along the banks. This will hopefully let more light in and help to encourage in-stream
vegetation to grow which is essential for the invertebrates in the stream.
This is a beautiful site to work at, comprising of not only the stream, but also a large pond
and wooded area maintained as a haven for wildlife by the landowner for many years.
Please wear suitable clothing i.e. long trousers and long sleeved top, and bring waterproofs
just in case! Suitable footwear is essential - wellies or a sturdy pair of walking boots. If
you've got waders please bring them along!

No previous knowledge or experience needed, just your enthusiasm! Get in touch if you're
interested via Facebook, email
